Ooop's, I meant mason mix (I just looked at the bag!) Home Depot sells it and it's type "N" Very convenient!
  • jeff kirt/ kirtbag Carving mix

the mason mix I use is type s. It's the stronger of the two I believe.
  • John Eddington

Interesting link here:  http://www.mc2-ice.com/support/estref/popular_conversion_files/maso...  The different types of mortars (type M, type S, type N) all spell out every othe letter of the workd "mason work."  Pretty neat.  Some pretty nice information on that page.

Hey kenny, tru pak comes with light agg already in the mix. I think its almost all lightweight agg. Mine has no lightweight agg in it. The only thing that is the same is the weight. Orherwise, they are totally different.
  • Tru Pac/Walttools/Don

Jeff is correct.  The TruPac mix contains a good amount of lightweight materials designed for the overall square footage extension and weight reduction of the base mortar that is added to it. It takes about 110 pounds of regular weight mixes to cover cover the same sq footage as the 80 pound Trupac batch.

I can't speak for Jeff, but you have to be careful in further extending mixes that are already lightened because at some point you will effect the strength integrity of the mix.  Many common lightweight materials are not reactive during the hydration process of the cement and are merely filler.  Too filled and you are too weak, not to mention they get to be a pain to work with as the wet integrity of the mix suffers as well.

Don is also correct, too much light agg. will definitly weaken the mix. I tried many different lightweight agg. in my mixes and just couldnt get the strength i was after. It has its pro and cons just like any mix. Again, as i stated before, the difference in weight is minimal at best. The false body may give your a bit more sq footage, but on inverted or ceiling type applications, its almost a must.
