David, the sphynx was made with gray cement, white sand, and liquid black colorant that I stirred in at the end of mixing so that it had some striations. Poured into a cylinder mold made from metal flashing. I had studied pics off the net of other sphynxes. And drew mine to fit the mold. It was a long complicated carve. Took about 6 - 8 hours, if I remember correctly.

    Thank you!
About a year ago I found a picture of a door, and since I'm a faux finisher, I decided to go for it.
So, I had in front of me six panel metal exterior door, that I supposed to "create" an antique wood door with old hinges
Hardware was very hard to find........so why not to try with concrete... crazy, uh?...Well...check the pictures...

Thank you David. We have been working on this process for the better part of seven years. The mix is 1 1/2" thick on the countertops. We have finally gotten our limestone mix in bags to resell. I have looked at your photos and saw that you are a Shirestone man. They contacted us about four years ago about training. I told them at that time we already had a mix and a method we like. Of course our countertops are quite a bit heaver but we sure love the system we have created. By the way your craftmanship is very good. I was very impressed with your shower as well. Keep in touch. If you would like to talk further please call me or email me for any info you might want or need.

    Thanks David.
I have always used my own color system. I did use some acid stain (Brickform Turquoise) this time just to get the depth of color. I haven't come up with a green similar to the acid color yet. I was going to market my colrs but when the economy went south I put it on hold. Maybe when things pick up again.

Hey David, have you checked out our network. Concrete Artists Network.com? We are the originator of this style of forum for our industry. We have a lot of other artists and photos you may be interested in. Alot of the same people here are there and then some and we all just kind of shuffle between the two. Thought I'd let you know.

Thanks again for the thoughts on my work. I'll let you know about any product releases I will have in the future.

    Talk to you soon

Thanks for your comment David. This was a project I did during a class
at DCI. This was engraved and stained over a micro topping. The micro
topping was Sgraffino by Color Maker and the stains were DCI solvent
based dyes. Many thanks to Bob Harris for his guidance and input on this project.I will be posting more photos of this and other projects soon.

    Thanks again for your comments

    Hi David,

I forgot to ask. What is the "wax dog" ? Is it the plaster wax technique used in venetian plaster? I really like it. Do you do your own stencils? Or is this drawn on? I do lots of skimcoats from a mix we have designed over the past four years. We do lots of art work on the floors. I tried to look at your website, is it working?

One other thing I really like your taste in music. I have lots of blues and the collection is growing. I know its corny but I even have the Black Snake Moan sound track. Good music is good no matter what time or place it comes from.

Thanks and Have a great day David

David thanks for your kind words on my work. I got a lot of information about the model design concept from Nathan Giffin & Richard Winget. Richard has a great write up on the model process on the subscription side of Vertical Artisans. I don't know if you are a subscriber or not but the information there is phenomenal and endless it seems. I will post some of my overlay photos so that you can check them out. I have already made the 3D model concept something that I will do on all of my future projects. It made the whole process fun and I even gathered other ideas as I carved out the model. I used a oven bake clay from my local art store for the water feature and casting plaster for the simulated flagstone overlay and then painted them with watered down acrylics and sealed it with a simple water based sealer to lock in the colors. The casting plasterer carved up nice and I just used a sponge brush to tap on the colors without coloring the carved lines that replicate the grout lines. Use clay tools for the carving for everything its fun and it really puts your head in the project way before you even order the products.

    Hi David,

I will see if I can do anyting about this. I know sometimes there are gliches with software, so I will check it out today.

    Thanks,

I guess I should read the whole profile, I would really like to know more about the fabrication, so any help would be great.

  • victor arias

Thanks for your comment and add me in your friends list, I prefer cedar for small carving like this, and majogany for big things , the pieces from the door I made by hand in the place.I did with a piece of metal with the shape moving many times.Sorry for my english.
  • Christian Maucieri

Thanks, I have a home show next February and I wanted to include a floor sample with wood texture. I think your color scheme will be excellent.
  • Christian Maucieri

Hi David, That home show is actually end of February. It will be our first one so I'm a little nervous
  • Christian Maucieri

I just might take you up on that. I have an Idea of what we will create. This being the first show I'm going to keep it simple and focus on the product and the possibilities of what can be done. I'm going to try and have everything displayed made from concrete or overlayed with concrete. Probably a fireplace as a center piece, some vertical samples and floor overlays, maybe an artificial rock with house number that can be raffled off for a front yard. I plan on starting the display next month. It all has to fit in a 10x20 area and I imagine it will fill up fast.
  • victor arias

hi David is a big coincidence the chair that you show me in the first picture is de same that my costumer got in his home.if you check my video(the medieval room) after the secret door open you can see de chair.thanks.My regards victor
  • Joe Townsley

    Hey thanks David!
  • Tim Meger

That might have been nice, but instead they did me one better... they agreed to never speak to me again! Hilarious huh. Oh well, the guy was an idiot. Im glad hes outta my life.

On the other hand I sat here for a few minutes ans watched your pics scroll by and realized that many of my favorite countertops were in fact done by YOU!

I kid you not man, I have used a number of your pics numerous times to show people how good concrete countertops can potentially look, not realizing that so many of my favorites are yours... very nice work my friend!

  • chris legg

Thanks David.I dont think I am related to Adrian Legg. Who dose he play with? Your counter tops look really good! I am starting a counter top job.The tops will be stamped with a light rock texture.I used epoxy on my last tops but they take on scratches.I need a sealer that can be applied fairly thick but be more durable ,any ideas.
  • Nathan Brownell

Thanks for the compliments David.  I know the subscription is well worth it.  In the near future.  I am in the middle of relocating (about 800 miles) starting a business in a new town(born and raised aka home) and fixing a fixer upper that is more of a fixer than an upper.  I love it the challenge of life in its self.  Really digging the music right now. Finding it very is to think.  Ahhhh.  Anyway thanks again for the compliments.
  • Christian Maucieri

Hi David, Things have worked out well since the show, It's still a little slow; but as the weather gets better I expect to close a few more jobs from the show. There was a lot learned from the show and I will be changing the display completely for next year.  Our show is indoors and they will not allow you to work on a project while you are at the show. Next show I am going to do a piece that shows the whole process and maybe include some videos. Another company that does Flex-c-ment was showing a video on loop and as a result they always had traffic jams at their booth with people watching. I might install a screen right into an artificial rock instead of a plaque.

I just finished a fireplace and now have to color it on Tuesday. I have a client that wants a fireplace done with Nathan's style of carving, They are looking to get it done within the next 2 mos. I'm trying to get a commitment without being pushy.

If we get a nice summer weather wise, I expect to do fairly well. I'm excited to really get going.

Are you going to Thom's Campinar? being that your fairly close.

  • Christian Maucieri

The biggest problems that we ran into were People saw the fireplace and most thought thats what we do. They didn't grasp the concept of an overlay without walking them through it. I took it as a compliment that they were completely fooled, not one person realized that what we did was not real, Thats the up side, The down side was we got grouped in with the other stone guys and there were probably 20 at this show. As soon as someone realized that it was artificial that's when they became intrigued. In Canada this type of work is so new to the residential market that people assume it's real and sometimes pass you by because of that. They only see this kind of work at museums, zoo's and theme parks. One thing I heard a number of people say as they walked by was " wow that's beautiful, I could never afford that" They think it's real so the have a pre conceived idea that the cost is incredible to cut stones like that.

I like your Ideas and I'll certainly use them next time around, We do have to re-do the display though. It was way to heavy. We work out of our garage right now and don't have a fork lift.

  • Christian Maucieri

Hey Dave, I've got it in the garage right now. The problem is we made it so damn heavy. I don't know if I want to try and move it again. I am trying to find someone to take it before I consider junking it.
  • Robert Duncan

Hi david, excellent counter top work. My son and I are working on some pre cast today. With our water feature we used wire lath and rebar shaped close to the finished shape. Then we did our scratch, starting at bottom working up.then then with sculpting mix we started at top worked down. We shaped our rocks then used a texture stamp, acid, then sealed. We hand bombed all the mud for this one. But now after visiting Thom at BBS. we use a Tirollesa. Thom showed us some old school techniques that speed up the proccess, alot. If you get a chance take in a three dayer you wont regret it.Hope I was of some help, Rob

Good, power point that cave is amazing.  I hope to visit  one day.  I hear it now open to the public.  Nothing like first hand experience to get a good grip on the texture and look of the cave for future reference.

  • Allan Philip Sutherland

    David,

You asked about the clay used in positive sculpting temple panels & marine invertebrates for mold-making, as well as use in scale models.  I use an inexpensive product called Klean Klay which is supplied by Art Chemical Products Inc,

    1019 Salamonie Ave, Huntington, IN 46750      (260)-356-2328

This material is far superior to any other oil-based clay.

  • Christian Maucieri

You need to switch to spider lath. It's a lot kinder to your fingers.
  • scott dobert

well if yah didnt bleed out or loose to many fingers i cant wait to see what you been up too !! i know im a pest! lol!
  • David Driggs

Kenny-Kel Crete is great. I put it in my countertop mix and it really helps several ways. I learned about it from Warren Ness, who really does his homework on chemistry's. Richard Winget uses it in his rock scapes, too. check out www.kelcrete.com for more info. A little goes a long way, as the recommended doage is about 1 oz. per 5 gallons of mix water. I recently figured out, thanks to my boy, that it does not help in Kirt Bag. Jeff must have addressed those needs in his formula already.

David... I truly appreciate your feedback. I will review Bryan Gauthier website. And yes, I agree that Nathan carving style is superb. I am keen to learn and develop these skills. However, I've got to start managing my time better.  I am tight on time and spending time to learn about vertical overlays is a bit risky. However, every time I visit Nathans website and look at his work, I feel inspired and I honestly can’t resist the beauty in his work. A beauty that makes you comeback every time … despite your time limitations. I really feel passionate about it. Thank you for all the encouragement and support.
