I used a similar method for the construction that I learned in Keith Tutor's dvd set on rock making. I improvised a bit, and used zip ties to connect my armature materials together rather than the hog ring plier that Tutor uses. I found them to go rather quickly and much easier to find than the pliers and rings in my area.
