Thanks! Yep the foam idea is working for me. I use spray foam insulation to bond them (wire it for a temp hold). I got the foam free by running an ad in craigslist. Stored it for about a year but it was worth it! Ya gotta get the lathe on very securely (tie the ends down) so it does not bounce around while you apply the scratch coat.
Another source for foam is trailer sales. The trailers are shipped with durable square foot foam blocks.

Great ideas. What do you do to attach the lathe to the foam itself? Do you just attach the ends of the lathe where it overlaps?

I just use guy wire. bend it into a staple shape and push it in the foam. If you can push it thru the foam and twist it tight from the backside, even better. Get some good gloves and literally crush and tuck the lathe as tight as you can against the foam. Some times I can get it so tight that I don't need to secure it. Spend some time into tucking and folding that lathe. It will make the mudding process go better.
