Not typical wood but oh so interesting. It look just as you say, a beat up piece of lumber.  Hack marks and everything.

Thanks Don.  She wanted a mantle that was out of the ordinary, a real old and beat up piece of wood.  It was my first attempt at any wood carving.   Showing her on Sunday, hope she likes it.

Thanks guys!  I ended up getting the fireplace job.  I started today.  She loved the wood mantel but now that I have the scratch coat on she's thinking about going with a solid stone piece.  I bumped out her original mantle 3 inches with lath then used rapid set mortar to cover it.  She loved the color and the look.  I'm gonna go over it with my micro-topping mix then color.  I love this craft! I've never been so excited to go to work :)
