Eric, I have white and transparent base colors for concrete and about 10 different iron oxide pigment powders. I usually mix all colors what I need. White base color with lighter colors and transparent base with darker colors.  Many times I have used lighter colors and darker colors to same stone, this way you can get more contrast.
