Enjoy some Joe!

There are many things that you can accomplish with stone facing. A traversing rock wall for children in a middle school is just one of them. After this project was completed the school had the "holds" mounted to the wall and foam pads placed on the ground at the base of this wall. The children could climb up around 1 - 3 feet and traverse the wall and its various obstacles.

I can do that

I Can Do that

Many people ask me “How did you get into this? How did it all start?”

This is a short auto biography of how Vertical Artisans came into existence.

It has been more than a ten year journey that has impacted my life physically, mentally and spiritually. I hope you enjoy reading it as it has been a delight for me to reflect and write it.

The year was 1982. Custom 77 auto re-builders was the name of the business and the job was sweeping up the place. I was so excited to be… Continue

World of Concrete 2008 --- Nathan Giffin Guest Speaker Feb. 2nd Las Vegas

Yes, I am very excited about this event. This year was excellent. Richard Winget and I had a ball working the crowd. I have to give a Special Shout Out to Ed Skwarek for allowing me to use his shop to fabricate the exhibit.

The class will be a 3 hour seminar entitled Vertical Decorative Concrete - Passing Fad or Untapped Market.
You can guess what I believe. I w… Continue

Thanks Nathan. Yes gravity is a problem. We have been doing some vertical but most of it is along the limestone stamped look in showers and walls. Haven't had much success with getting vertical hand carved work yet. I believe it is coming.

Oh one other exciting ( at least to me) thing, I have been making carved concrete containers for several years now. I started doing them in college. Recently I came up with a way to lay them up, carve and color them in about 20 minutes. My guys call them the Basalt bowls. I hope to have some on the forum in the next week or so

Thanks Nathan,
I was just checking my email for the clients new phone number and saw your comments. I know I should have internal confluence of confidence and happiness in my own work and not need the praises of other to validate my work. However it is great when I get Kudos from people especially those who know and do this type of art. It just makes you warm and fuzzy all over. I
have to leave in a few minutes to meet with the client and go over his invoice. There was a lot of extras in this one.
I was also training two new guys and you should have seen one them freaking out as I was dashing my stippling on. You could see his face just falling as I was doing it. Jake said "Are you sure your not covering up what we just did" I said " your going to have to just trust me Jake and would you step back your making me nervous" After we were done he said " Man it worked, I thought for sure it was going to cover it up, I thought we were done before you even did the stippling, that just made it POP!!"
Thanks again for the comments and the forum. I need to do more encouraging also.

Ok Nathan I watched the 3D Lichens video on demand and all I have to say is that raises the bar in detail. It was well worth the small fee to have a hint of the concept much less get all of the concept awesome work to you and Mike and thanks for sharing the knowledge. I can't wait to get rolling on something so I can try it out, I just saw some Lichens up close on the parkway recently and Mike nailed the illusion of them, Flawless!

Hi Nathan, thanks for your comments. The customers are absolutely delighted; they kind of didn't know what to expect really, although I had shown them pictures of other walls and let them see a stone plaque that I'd made, but the final result surpassed all their expectations
