The large spaces between stones in intended to support a 'live' filler. In this case either Irish moss or Thyme. (a few more stones are still required to fill out the edges...)

All the coloring was done with acid stains. For rich, deep tones I don't know that anything else compares. I use the Concrete Coatings Inc. acid stains (http://concretecoatingsinc.com/vivid_acid_stains.html) although I suspect others would work as well. (Bronze green (olive now), mahogany amd weathered terra cotta are my favorites)
Sometimes, especially when I want deep leathery colors, I'll acid stain, then wash the surface with a thinned chocolate acrylic coloring, it's amazing the rich color it produces.
