Shaping and carving in sections....some of this would get covered by subsequent layers of mortar. Nothing special about the mix...I used a 2 gallon bucket. 2 buckets FINE masons sand + 1 bucket Plastic Cement (portland with lime already in mix) + extra cup of lime + 2 cups of mortar clay made a good mix for me.
