Hey Mike Corey Draper here, we have been carving a fire place out door. I have been using Kurt bag, I tried using what you had sugested in a earlyier post 3 part sand one part portland and 1/2 part clay and the sand really showed to much in the final carving. Im really happy with Kurt bag but like on this project we ran short. Do I just need a finer sand?

On this project I used 14 shovels sand 9 shovels cement and 1/2 shovel lime. The mix was excellent but the sand they had there was very nice fine aggregate.

I add dishwashing liquid, it makes the solution more plastic
but you have to be careful with water, the solution
  can become too liquid
