Actually slate-like rocks are my favorite. Did you start with dark stains first then overlap lighter ones...?

May answer myself.lol. Lighter acid stains FIRST ! jsut dilute them, and works towards darker shades of same color if needed.... guess good for newbyes, like me !

NELSON, the quick answer is you are correct i start with lighter colors then add darker. the longer answer is that its not as cut and dry as all that lol! on this project all my stains are natural pigments no acids. i used smiths,opus,some diluted latex paint,and some dry iron oxide stains. i get a light base coat goin then do a bit of shadow painting and feature high lighting then i let it dry a bit maybe even help it along with a heat gun then do lots of dark and light teqniques that i have learnd from the subscription site and a few tricks of my own so thats the basics! lol! thanks nelson!
