If you don't mind me asking, what mix did you use on this top? Did you hand paint the checkerboard? Cool concept.

The top is a 1/2" overlay. We were formed up and ready to pour when we overheard the homeowners talking about how they wanted to get a chess board to play out by the pool. I went to the local tile shop and got some 12x12 travertines and slate and had my boys cut a bunch of 2x2's to make a board and some accents (You can see some more in the stucco column). I taped it off before pouring, then grouted and sealed it along with everything else. Yes, the tap was fully functional from the very beginning of the project, and I highly recommend doing every job that way. If you drink a couple 12-packs of the customer's favorite flavor, you can fill the caps with resin or some-such, clear-coat the tops and even glue some felt to the bottoms if you wish, giving them a set of checkers as a parting gift.
