Here's a real masonry fireplace I built a few years ago out of CMU, then covered with stucco. If you're looking for more info on designing and building your own you can check out www.rumford.com. They have plans and specs. for free.

No problem dave! Thanks, I've built quite a few, the most difficult part is setting the fire brick, the rest goes pretty quick. As far as the throat and damper goes, you can actually buy a pre made iron peice that fits up in there after you build the fire box. You can get these from either a masonry supplier, or sometimes a wood stove/ fireplace shop.
