Geodes are fun to work with and look stunning in vertical applications.

Geodes for Vertical Artisans

Concretion:

Geology Definition: A rounded mass of mineral matter found in sedimentary rock.

Concretions form as minerals within a rock segregate and begin to precipitate within cracks and cavities, or as a sediment builds up in successive layers around a nucleus such as a shell or pebble.

Vug:

Geology Definition: A small cavity in a rock or vein, often with a mineral lining of different composition from that of the surrounding rock.

Most commonly cracks and fissures opened by tectonic activity (faulting or folding) and are partially filled by quartz, calcite and other secondary minerals. These may resemble geodes, but lack the outer chalcedony shell.

Geode:

Geology Definition: A hollow, usually rounded rock lined on the inside with inward-pointing crystals. Geodes always have an outer shell made of chalcedony, and are more resistant to erosion than their host rock.

Geodes form when mineral-rich water entering a cavity in a rock undergoes a sudden change in pressure or temperature, causing crystals to form from the solution and line the cavity's walls.

Boulder:

Geology Definition: A large rounded mass of rock lying on the surface of the ground or embedded in the soil.

Boulders are rarely found in place. They are smaller chucks off of much bigger igneous batholiths that was broken off and transported by glaciers or water erosion.
