Artistry in Decorative Concrete Returns with Demonstrations and a New Awards Program: The Concrete Surfaces & Decorative Pavilion Awards
CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION and CONCRETE SURFACES magazine’s 11th annual Artistry in Decorative Concrete Demonstrations will take place again at World of Concrete 2013. The live-action event, located in the Concrete Surfaces & Decorative Pavilion, features industry artisans who share their techniques and experiences with attendees. The first two days of the demonstrations will feature artist works-in-progress; the final 1½ days feature completed project displays. Artists selected for the Demonstrations will be eligible for one of two $500 prizes awarded to the Attendees’ Choice and the Experts’ Choice.
New for WOC 2013, the editors of CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION and CONCRETE SURFACES announce the Concrete Surfaces & Decorative Pavilion Awards. The Awards will recognize the art, craftsmanship, and industry education that occurs in the exhibits in the Concrete Surfaces & Decorative Pavilion. All exhibitors with a booth in the Concrete Surfaces & Decorative Pavilion are invited and encouraged to enter the work being done in their booths into the Concrete Surfaces & Decorative Pavilion Awards.
Artistry in Decorative Concrete Demonstrations
Artisans who want to participate in the Artistry Demonstrations may be either self-nominated or nominated by a sponsoring exhibitor. Any sponsorship arrangement between a sponsor and an artist are not arranged, administered, or overseen by Hanley Wood. Demonstration artist sponsors may have representatives on hand at the Artistry Demonstration area and may discuss with WOC attendees the products or equipment being used.
The final selection of artists to be included in the Artistry Demonstrations will be by the editorial staff of CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION and there will be no appeals. Efforts will be made to include projects that feature a wide range of decorative and concrete surface applications.
There will be two winning demonstrations: one selected by popular vote of World of Concrete attendees (Attendees’ Choice) and the second selected by a panel of expert judges (Experts’ Choice). The expert judges will be selected by CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION’s editorial staff. Ballots to be used for the Attendees’ Choice will be available in the Concrete Surfaces & Decorative Pavilion during the show.
A 10x10-foot concrete pad, electricity, and water will be provided but all artisans must provide their own materials, tools, and equipment. No tools or materials will be provided by Hanley Wood, however a lock-box for tools will be available. Artisans may use and display any equipment or materials they choose. There are no restrictions on labeling of materials or equipment. Hanley Wood will provide a slab or other concrete to the artist’s specification. The work does not necessarily have to be done on site, but must be created specifically for the WOC 2013 Artistry in Decorative Concrete Demonstrations.
Artisans or exhibitors who want to participate in the 2013 Artistry in Decorative Concrete Demonstrations must fill out a nomination form that can be found at www.concreteconstruction.net. Questions should be directed to Bill Palmer at bpalmer@hanleywood.com, 773-494-4619.
Concrete Surfaces & Decorative Pavilion Awards
In addition to the Artistry in Decorative Concrete Demonstrations, CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION and CONCRETE SURFACES will sponsor the Concrete Surfaces & Decorative Pavilion Awards, open to any exhibitor in the Pavilion. Exhibitors wishing to enter the Awards must fill out a brief entry form available through the World of Concrete. There is no fee for entering the awards program.

Exhibitors may enter more than one category with separate decorative work in their booth. Ballots for the Attendees Choice Awards will be available in the Concrete Surfaces & Decorative Pavilion. The Expert Judges will be asked to judge each project based on craftsmanship, originality, and technical expertise. Interviews will be conducted by the Expert Judges on Thursday Feb. 7. and videotaped.
