Any suggestions of how to fix this..tried filling and feathering with chip brush but cracks keep coming back..?

If it continues to return, a flexible sealant such as caulk.

This is VERY VERY common in this trade.  Jeff is right on with suggesting(not in this case) that when doing these wraps you have to have a good lath system and a good scratch coat.  Adding fiber to your scratch coat on columns is a good idea as well since it helps reduce crack transfer.

Coating/Sealing the column(before lath) with a polymeric membrane material will also go very far in locking the whole piece together and reduce the environmental effects that cause wood columns to shrink/swell.  These micro movements are amplified at the corners and cause those nasty fissures.
