Yes, alot of people use drum mixers,especially if they are using a sprayer.

instead of using mortar what about making your own mix with plastic cement and sand then adding your bag?

Hey Benjamin, the intent behind Kirtbag was to have an inexpensive admixture that would be cheap to ship, and that you could easily add to a toll brand mortar mix. You can purchase that mortar mix at home depots, lowes, or most any local hardware store. Now, all the person needs to worry about is a mortar mix bag and KirtBag. Two sacks of mix and your done. The average sqft price for a batch of my mix is $2.50 or so, all costs included. With all that being said, it seems like you would have to invest more time and space in order to make your own mortar blend, which in the end, may save you a few cents. You will have bags of stuff everywhere and alot of time in the prep. The admixture type vert. mix saves you money on the shipping, will be consistant mix, gives you more sqftage, and requires much less effort preparing your mix. Hope this helps....
